We built piirat because the gap between knowing you should care about privacy and actually doing something about it is enormous. We're here to close it.
Our mission
Surveillance capitalism is the default business model of the internet. Every free service you use is monetizing your attention, your habits, and your identity — usually without your meaningful consent.
piirat exists to make the alternative practical. Not paranoid. Not inconvenient. Just better defaults — hardware, software, and knowledge that puts you back in control of your own data.
We curate, test, and write about privacy tools with one filter: would we actually use this ourselves? If the answer is no, it doesn't make the list.
What we stand for
Transparency
We tell you exactly what a tool does, what it costs, and what trade-offs it involves. No affiliate-driven rankings, no paid placements.
Practicality
Perfect privacy is impossible. Good privacy is achievable. We focus on the 20% of changes that eliminate 80% of your exposure.
Open source first
Closed-source software asks you to trust a company. Open-source software lets you verify. We default to auditable tools whenever they exist.
No fear, no hype
Privacy content is full of doom and surveillance theater. We cut through it with clear, actionable guidance — no catastrophizing required.
Who we are
piirat is a small, independent project. We are not backed by venture capital, we do not run ads, and we do not sell your data. Revenue comes from the store — hardware and guides we believe in enough to sell.
